A Era do Gelo o filme: uma análise de seu potencial para o ensino de paleontologia

Abstract

This paper presents an analysis of the movie “Ice Age (2002)” and its potential in the teaching of paleontology. For this was used the Qualitative Methodology which is based on the relation of the studied object and the involved individuals, taking account of the researcher’s experience and creativity. Therefore, three elements of the animations where selected: the ice age that contextualizes the narrative scenario; the animals that appear during the scenes and the Man that lives in this age. From this, we sought to distinguish the relation between the content of the images and the adopted framework. It was conclued that the ice age of narrative occourred 18.000 years ago and most of the animals in the movie lived during this event. In the case of some characters, there was a problem of temporal coexistence as in the case of the Family Brontotheriidae and the squirrel Scrat, both, according to the paleontology record did not exist during the Pleistocene period. Besides that, the spatial coexistence between the main characters with the Raphus cucullatus brings another problem. The R. cucullatus were endemic of small islands of western Indic ocean. In relation to the human being, this one already existed in this time and may have coexistence with the most of these animals, because it was in the American continent since 12 thousand years ago. This way, the elements presented here suggest that the studied resource may be an interesting tool for the construction of scientific knowledge in concern of Paleontology
