dc.description.resumo | Significant increase in the global particleboard production has occurred in particleboard production. This material may be used as alternative to solid wood since it may be produced from forestry wastes and presents a greater control of the production process. However, researches are necessary about their conservation, preservation and durability in order to make them more feasible for final utilization. Therefore, it is necessary to know all causes of possible damages to the products. Among xylophagous organisms, dry wood termites (Cryptotermes brevis) are the main pest and it is essential to select materials more resistant to its attack. The aim of this work was to verify the resistance of different wood and particleboards to dry wood termite attack. The survival rate and deterioration index were evaluated. In the first stage, a methodology was adapted for commercial particleboards. In the second stage, the methodology was applied for laboratorial particleboards made from sugar cane bagasse. In the third stage the methodology was applied to Australian red cedar wood and particleboards for comparison with pine wood, which is considered control wood in most papers in the literature. From first to second stage, the results showed that to adequate moisture condition was essential to decrease insect mortality. In the second stage, sugar cane particleboards produced with different processing variables showed different resistance. Pine wood presented far higher susceptibility than red cedar wood to termite attack. However, particleboards made from both species presented similar resistance to particleboards made from red cedar wood. | pt_BR |
