Abstract

Descrição

Biofibers have been used as raw materials for many manufacturing and industrial applications. In this chapter, the plant fibers produced by the cambial activity of trees are emphasized. These fibers present wide variation as to properties, composition, and dimensions, which affects the quality of the wood-based products. Current methods for evaluating wood and byproduct properties are generally time-consuming and labor-intensive. Near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy, coupled with chemometric tools, is a fast and low-cost alternative solution for evaluating wood properties and quality categories. The present review lists important studies where NIR spectroscopy was sucessfully applied to estimate and/or classify biofiber characteristics, especially wood and the main-derivated products such as pulp, paper, charcoal, and engineered products. These studies have demonstrated that NIR spectroscopic data, combined with powerful multivariate statistic tools and artificial intelligence solutions, can provide fast, inline, and reliable evaluations of wood properties or fiber quality, helping managers in their decision-making.
