Abstract
Descrição
Biorefining is the sustainable synergetic processing of biomass into a spectrum of marketable food and feed ingredients, products (chemicals, materials), and energy (fuels, power, and heat). Biorefineries can be classified based on the raw materials used such as starch crops, sugar crops, perennial grasses and legumes, lignocellulosic crops, lignocellulosic residues, oil crops, aquatic biomass, and organic residues. The industrial biorefinery is a promising route for the creation of new bio-based products using combinations of thermal, biological, and chemical processes. The sugar platform is the largest platform for the production of chemicals based on biomass. Six and five carbon carbohydrates can undergo selective dehydration, hydrogenation, and oxidation reactions to give useful products. This work will summarize information about potential building blocks, such as sorbitol, furfural, glucaric acid, hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), and levulinic acid. Properties, applications, and challenges production of these building blocks will be pointed out. In addition, integrated production with the sugar platform will also be discussed.
