Abstract: To analyze the relationship between socioeconomic conditions and desires of tourist destinations in Brazil, this study was conducted to determine whether socioeconomic data, reported in the PNUD report (2000), may interfere with the short term decision of the household population to make tourism in Brazil. For this analysis, the most desirable destinations in Brazil were considered according to information available in Brazilian Tourism´s Ministry in 2006. The theoretical framework addressed two main topics: 1) tourism and its importance to local development; and 2) marketing and image of tourist destinations. After gathering the data, the following constructs were created: education, health, income, housing and demographics. The tests used to analyze the relationship between variables were: the Spearman correlation and the Chi-square. The findings showed no significant relationship between the constructs and the desire of Brazilian tourists. According to the results, it seems possible to infer that the socioeconomic conditions are not important factors to explain the population's desire for sightseeing at national level in short time.
