Abstract: Cerrado is the second larger Brazilian biome, and has as a characteristic the high susceptibility to fire. There is a large influence of the fire on the seed germination and seedling establishment, being this effects studied by many researchers. This paper aimed to analyze the effect of the pyroligneous extract on the germination of four seeds from Brazilian Cerrado species. The extract was obtained by the distillation of the smoke from burning Eucalyptus wood. The extract was diluted at 50, 500, 5000 and 50000 times. Seeds of Eugenia dysenterica, Anadenanthera colubrina, Handroanthus serratifolius and Stryphnodendron adstringens were submitted to the imbibition in these diluted extracts using water as a control. The percentage and speed of germination were evaluated on isolated experiments for each species. Low extract concentrations stimulate the germination of E. dysenterica seeds while high concentrations inhibit germination of H. serratifolius. The germination of seeds of A. colubrina and S. adstringens there was not influenced by the extract. It was concluded that the response of seeds during germination in the presence of pyroligneous extract is species dependent.
