Abstract: The milk productive chain of the west of Santa Catarina has grown very much in the last 20 years. It is one of the main in come sources of a great number of familiar rural producers, allows the installation of many industries and the creation of many jobs in the region. How ever, there are evidences that there is not a coordination of the productive chain that would conduct it to be competitive. The fast changes in the dairy chain demand an adjustment of actions so that each segment can be competitive and, in a coordinated way, make the whole milk agribusiness chain competitive. This work is an analysis of the milk agribusiness chain, in which the transactions, the institutional and organizational environment are described, analyzing their interactions and verifying how the chain coordination occurs. The theoretical model for the coordination analysis was the Transaction Cost Economy. Five agribusiness subsystems formed by rural producers cooperatives, private capital enterprise, rural producers cooperative associated with a dairy businessman, sea teds of land reform, cooperative and enterprise formed by familiar rural producers were analyzed. The methodology that was used was based on the qualitative research, by means of a case study. In general, it was observed that the organization a land institutional environment is influencing in the productive chain coordination, where different organization a land institutional designs are found. There is a great dynamism in the whole productive chain; however, it is in the producer industry interface that the greatest transformations as to attend the legal institutional and market demands are occurring. It was observed that there are coordinated individual actions, however, there is not a coordination of the whole productive chain. Faced to the facts, we suggest the promotion of a better coordination as to promote the sustainable competitivity involving the actors of the process.
