Abstract: In this paper we give consideration, albeit in an introductory manner, to the extent in which poetic devices intertwine with rhetorical devices and, by doing so, do not present themselves as necessarily excluding means of persuasion. To that purpose, we adopt as corpus selected excerpts of Aristotle’s On Poetics and On Rhetoric, looking closer at the treatment the philosopher gives to rhetorical syllogism, to the use of examples, and to the application of metaphors in discourses that have persuasion as their aim. Our investigation, therefore, attempts to point out features that could highlight possible intersections between poetic and rhetorical elements of speech, according to Aristotle of Stagira (384-322 BCE).
