Abstract: This article aims to socialize the results of a qualitative study aimed to analyze the perception that high school students of a public school have about reading and what reading skills mastered. The analysis was based on a diagnosis of individualized reading, attended by thirtytwo students from public schools. Proposed activities contemplated the news genre and questions that sought to verify the reading skills. In constructing the theoretical framework used were the contributions of Bakhtin (1992), Marcuschi (2010), Solé (1998), Koch (2002) and Dionysus (2002). The results indicate that students master the skills to build a global representation of the text and to locate information explicit. Indicate the urgency of a job covering the other skills listed. It was observed also that the conception of reading that underlies the perception of students is that all the senses are ready in the text.
