Abstract: By understanding reading as a complex activity that involves an intense relationship between reader and text in the production of meanings, the article aims to present a theoretical reflection about the reading action, in order to encompass the conceptions about reading as a process of interaction and understand the actions involved in the relationship between the reader and the printed and multimodal text. The reflection is based on the studies of Smith (1999), Kleiman (1997), Solé (1998) and Koch and Elias (2007) from the cognitive perspective; Kress (2003), Kress and Bezemer (2009) in terms of textual multimodality and Freire (2001) on reading in its social aspect, in dialogue with scholars of the theme. The reflection points to the plurality of actions and to the interactional aspect between the reader and textual multimodality.
