Abstract: The dry winter conditions and high thermal amplitudes on the Southeastern Brazil have allowed the production of Syrah grapes using the double pruning technique, in which harvest, with high enological quality occurs in the winter, resulting the achievement of national and international awards for these wines. In order to elucidate the terroir and also as a basis for requesting the Geographical Indication for winter wines, it is important to understand the interaction among edaphoclimatic factors, vegetative aspects and quality of the berries. The typicality and origin of wines can vary according to the physico-chemical attributes of the soil, the vine vigor and yield and the climate of the growing region. In this article, seven Syrah vineyards, under double pruning management and in different municipalities of the Brazilian Southeast, were characterized by soil type, macroclimate and agronomical performance.
