Abstract: From a brief presentation of Pollock's argument in “State Capitalism”, this paper seeks to trace its frankfurtian reception, that is, its influence on the work of Horkheimer, Adorno, Habermas and Postone. Arguing against a pre-ponderant part of the secondary literature, we suggest that this influence was much more ambiguous (and that the reception of that argument was much more critical) in Horkheimer and Adorno than is usually recognized, contrary to what happens in the Habermasian case, in which convergence seems to be underestimated. Finally, we argue that the concept of “State capitalism”, which is already too problematic as a description of the post-war economic period in advanced countries, is increasingly being overcome with the neoliberal wave that transforms such societies mainly from the 1980s.
