Description: Biosurfactants have been investigated to improve seed protection and fertility for seedlings. The addition of biosurfactants before seed germination brings benefits to the plant, as biosurfactants have beneficial antimicrobial properties. In addition to seed protection by antimicrobial action, biosurfactants also contribute to the absorption of biogenic substances by plants. Additionally, biosurfactants can be applied together with chemical plant protection products and contribute to increasing their solubility and pulverization levels. Biosurfactants improve plant development by stimulating seed germination. This process begins when water enters the seed allowed by the seed coat, generating metabolism activation, which increases the size of the embryonic axis, this growth only occurs when the embryonic sheath tissues are permeable to water. These biosurfactants are amphiphilic and have equivalent dual effects, protecting seeds and plants due to antimicrobial activity and promoting local and systemic plant immunity, resulting in broad protection. All these properties are mentioned, united with the great environmental consistency of these biological molecules, resulting in the adequate application of biosurfactants in agriculture, reducing the use of agrochemicals, and contributing to environmental sustainability. The present chapter provides an appraisal of the applications of biosurfactants in improving seed protection and the initial development of seedlings.
