Resumo: β -glucans (BGs) are polysaccharides, which can be extracted from fungi, bacteria, and plant cell walls. Because they act as soluble fibers, BGs have metabolic and immunological modulating effects. This work aimed to evaluate the effect of a treatment using different levels of Saccharomyces cerevisae-isolated BG on both the metabolic and the inflammatory profile of rats induced to periodontal disease by means of ligature and to mellitus diabetes (streptozotocin via intraperitoneal). Forty wistar rats were randomly allocated in 5 groups (n=8) and then administered with BGs (0mg/kg, 10mg/kg, 20mg/kg, 40mg/kg, and 80mg/kg) for 28 days. After 14 days, the ligature was bilaterally performed on the first lower molars. On the 28th day, euthanasia was performed on the animals. The levels of total cholesterol CT, tricilglicerois (TAG), high-density lipoproteins (HDL-C), low density and very low-density lipoproteins (LDL-C+VLDL-C) were determined. Alveolar bone loss was found by morphometric analysis. Data were analyzed by using Variance Analysis followed by Dunnett test (p<0.05). Alveolar bone reabsorption as well as glicemia and TAG reduction were found to be lower from 40mg/kg dosage (p<0.05). However, for the CT, LDL-C+VLDL-C, and HDL-C variables, significant benefits were only found when 80mg/kg BG was used. It can be conclued that B glucans have a dosedependent effect on both alveolar bone reabsorption and metabolic parameters in diabetic rats sick with periodontal disease.
