Abstract: Throughout history, man's relationship with nature is based on exploring the environment to meet his needs, increasing exploration and influencing the cultural patterns of society. Our society has developed by exploiting natural resources without worrying about their depletion, many times causing irreversible impacts, extinguishing fauna and flora in a devastating dimension. In this context, environmental education emerges as an attempt to minimize these impacts, elaborating a series of proposals with the purpose of helping us to reflect, recover and overcome the ways in which the relationship between society and nature is structured. In this perspective, the objective of this work is to report the development of qualitative research, in which it was sought to investigate if and how environmental education happens in the final years of elementary education in the municipality of LavrasMG. Four interviews were carried out, the first one with the officer for the final years of elementary education within the municipal education department, and the other three with the heads of the schools. In the interviews, it was possible to verify that the conception of environmental education of those involved is somewhat limited. The examples cited revolved around raising students' awareness of topics such as recycling, water saving and gardening, and most of the environmental education projects that are being developed take place through public-private partnerships. This conception is insufficient because it does not understand environmental education in all its complexity, in a critical perspective, beyond individual or punctual actions, and do not take into account the social aspects of relations with nature in the capitalism.
