Abstract: Since the Industrial Revolution, the world has suffered environmental problems as a result of unbridled urbanization, causing social exclusion, displacing the rural population from the countryside to the city, deforesting and replacing men with machines. In this context, it is essential to understand the socioenvironmental contexts that permeate our society as well as to promote the awakening of a critical conscience that makes it possible to transform the realities around us. In this sense, the objective of this paper is to discuss the potential presented by the animated film Rio (2011) in the dissemination of environmental education from the eyes of the members of the Study Group on Scientific and Environmental Education (Geeca) of the Federal University of Lavras - MG. These students will look at the film as a subsidy for the dissemination of environmental education. The film is an animation based on the adventures of a couple of blue macaws and discusses biopiracy, species extinction and environmental preservation. It can be concluded that the students presented different visions regarding the potential of the Rio film in the dissemination of environmental education regarding the Brazilian environmental reality, passing through non-critical, critical, conservationist and superficial / stereotyped glances. And, in order to reach the potential for the dissemination of environmental education from a critical perspective, a more social analysis of the film is necessary, since this view has the role of understanding the environment in its entirety. We can conclude that cinema as a pedagogical resource presents interesting possibilities in the process of disclosure regarding environmental education.
