Resumo: This work analyzed the representativeness of women in the position of dean in the Federal Universities of Brazil in the last 37 years, considering the process of democratization of higher education and the growing role of women in public administration. The general objective of the research was to analyze the participation of women in the top management of federal higher education, as for the specific objectives, it sought to identify data on the performance of women classified by region, state, educational institution, as well as to understand the non-explicit dynamics that imply the occupation of positions in the high management of public higher education in the federal network. As for the methodological procedures, the research is classified as applied, with a qualitative and quantitative approach to the problem, an exploratory analysis was carried out to identify how many women held the position of dean, how many terms they held and which universities never had a dean. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 7 women, 4 deans and 3 former deans, and questionnaires were also applied to deans and former deans. As a result of the analysis, it was found that 67 women occupied the position of dean in 46 federal universities, in 24 states. Of the 69 federal universities in Brazil, it was verified that 23 institutions (33%) never had a woman occupying the position of dean, including the pro-tempore mandate. Despite the advances of women in the occupation of senior management positions, it was found that in 2022 Brazil had 17 women in the position of dean in Federal Universities, representing 25% of the chairs in these, evidencing the persistent under-representation of women in high management of Federal Institutions of Higher Education, although they have representation in the graduates of undergraduate courses, master's and doctoral degrees.
