Abstract

Multifunctional landscaping is based on the correlation between adorning the environment and exploring the various functionalities of the plants. Species such as sweet potato, which can be ornamental and consumed as food, are promising options for this use. This study characterizes and evaluates the suitability of sweet potato genotypes for multifunctional landscaping and identifies promising genotypes for different cultivations. A total of 108 genotypes from a germplasm bank were cloned, planted in pots containing four vines of each genotype, and grown in a greenhouse. The evaluations were performed at 60 and 120 days after planting. Qualitative and quantitative data related to shoots and landscaping criteria were analyzed by cluster analysis and mixed models. The sweet potato plant showed morphological diversity relevant to landscaping, so they can be introduced to the multifunctional landscaping market. Genotypes 74, 201, 648, 734, and Princesa are indicated for planting beds. Genotypes 467, 743, 986, 1043, and 1057 are suitable for cultivation in floor pots and arrangements. Genotypes 484, 1003, 1448, 1525, and Beauregard are the best genotypes for hanging pots and suspended structures. This study provides important information for sweet potato breeding programs, which may contribute to the development of new ornamental cultivars.
