Resumo: The present article chooses reading evaluation as a study object. In order to carry out the work, it was assumed that evaluation can be considered as an important stage of the teaching-learning process, in which it is possible to diagnose learning already consolidated, evaluate the results obtained and analyze the effectiveness of the methodology used. Thus, the scope of this work is based on the study of reading evaluation, using as reference the descriptors proposed by the Instituto Nacional de Estudos e Pesquisas (INEP). In this sense, the research was organized in two parts: a) theoretical research, which involves a compilation about the evaluation in a general way, about the specificities of the evaluation in Portuguese Language and reading itself; b) field research: which presents the results of an analysis of the treatment given to reading in written tests applied to elementary students II. After doing this work, it was verified that written tests, although recurrently used, still lack a treatment that can contribute to evidence more effective results. The obtained results reflected the primacy of a certain group of descriptors that do not provide the complexity of the reading act in different texts that circulate socially.
