Abstract: This paper intends to reflect over the constitution of ironic meaning-effects, based on the theoretical-methodological contributions of discourse studies. The main goal is to analyse the discursive functioning of the virtual meme. Basing ourselves, chiefly, on Maingueneau (2011), Charaudeau (2012) and Bakhtin (2015). Analytically, we traced the voices moved in the production of a meme, characterized the illustration that makes the meme up, and contrasted the comments of the internet users to these elements, checking, thus, the dialogues alluded to and the meaning-effects constructed in the process of interpretation. The results demonstrate that the multiple relations between the verbal statement and the image, characteristics of a multimodal text, potentialize the interpretatives possibilities of since we dialogically identified several discourses capable of attesting, contesting, complementing, and restricting the ironic speech of the interpreted interlocutor. In this process, the discursive ethos of the interpreted interlocutor and the complicity of the interpreting interlocutor show themselves to me predominant.
