Abstract: This article focuses on teachers’ continuing education; in this regard, it seeks to present support for Portuguese teachers concerning poetry genre teaching in the last two years of elementary school, this is the eighth and ninth year, observing critically the orientations of new guidelines for teaching this literary genre, presented by the Common National Curricular Base (BNCC). Furthermore, the reflection also discusses loss of prestige in literature area in school context, translated either into an insufficient and contradictory official document in relation to the concepts and theories presented in it, or in the absence of formative public policies that enable a thorough understanding of the document by primary school teachers. Theoretical basis for this article includes studies by Luiz Costa Lima (2002), Wolfgang Iser (1996; 2002) and Antonio Candido (1993; 1995) that help in understanding the specificity of language and literary reading, which is absent in the document but essential in the perspective of an emancipatory teaching of literature.
