Resumo: The present paper has the purpose of presenting and discussing an experience carried out by undergratuate students who are part of the Institutional Program of Teaching Initiation (PIBID) of Biology, with students of a public school of the county of Lavras-MG, within the project Education Integral Integrated, more specifically in the discipline of Research and Intervention, where it was sought to work through the poem "The Captive Bird" of Olavo Bilac the environmental issue with a critical bias, discussing social, political, economic and environmental issues from wild animals trafficking. In addition, it seeks to discuss the importance of the initial teacher training to have a critical and reflexive bias, so that future teachers can effectively assist in the construction of subjects who act actively in society. The class was given to students in the 1st and 3rd year of high school and after the discussion the students who taught the class were asked to reflect on the practice and write how it relates to the initial teacher training. These reports were later analyzed using the qualitative research method, more specifically content analysis and categorization. The results show the relevance of the use of the poem in the critical formation of graduates and students, since working the issues that permeate the environment makes it possible to widen the perspective they have on reality, thus being able to understand it in its totality.
