Abstract: This article is the result of a literature study about the importance of vocabulary / lexicon in mother tongue classes. The work was organized in three parts: historical basis for the study of vocabulary / lexicon; pedagogical approach of vocabulary / lexicon; theoretical-methodological considerations about the use of the dictionary. From the work undertaken, it became evident that the study of vocabulary / thesaurus is mainly for teaching foreign language, which become scarce research on the teaching of vocabulary / lexicon in mother tongue classes. Working with the lexicon demand criteria that go beyond the linguistic dimension, since the use of the words / terms constitutes a discursive activity. Thus, the study of vocabulary / lexicon includes lexical items just like the word, group of words and fixed expressions. Furthermore, it was shown that the use of the dictionary as a methodological resource requires preparation by the teacher so that the use of such material is carried out fruitful way.
